The French club Paris Saint-Germain secured their first FIFA World Cup victory in 15 years on Sunday after a nail-biting final against Argentina.
Vitinha, the Brazilian striker who joined the club in 2017, scored twice to help PSG come from behind and secure the title at Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
The match was closely contested throughout, with both teams creating numerous chances but failing to find the back of the net. However, it was Vitinha who made the crucial difference when he scored twice in the second half to give PSG the lead.
In the first half, Argentina dominated the game with Messi and Sergio Agüero leading the way. However, PSG began to assert themselves in the second half and gradually pulled level through some fine defending and goalkeeping from goalkeeper Keylor Navas.
But it was Vitinha who put PSG ahead for good when he scored his first goal in the 69th minute. The ball fell to him in the penalty area and he calmly slotted it past Argentine keeper Mauro Icardi.
Argentina responded with a counter-attack and eventually found the equalizer in the 88th minute, with Lionel Messi scoring from close range. But PSG held on for the win, thanks to a last-minute header from Neymar Jr., which sealed the victory.
Vitinha's performance was particularly impressive given that he had only been playing for the club for two seasons. He has become a key player for PSG under manager Thomas Tuchel and has already helped the team to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League this season.
"This is amazing! It's a dream come true," said Vitinha after the match. "I'm so happy for my teammates and everyone at the club. We worked hard all year and now we've achieved our goal."
PSG's victory marks the end of a long wait for the club to win the World Cup since they last won it in 2006. They will now face Italy in the final, which will be played on December 13th in Qatar.
